Jimdo Website Builder App Review

Jimdo Creator Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (3.6/5)

I enjoyed my experience with Jimdo and feel that its makers have genuinely tried to create an app that allows people to build a website from their phone. Having said this, you can’t fully edit in the app what you build in the browser and vice versa, which limits flexibility for switching between devices.

The menu system is a strong point, allowing you to easily navigate and add the elements you need to build a website. But I was expecting a wider range of templates than was offered in the free plan, and it would have been great to have more freedom to move and position elements and blocks when editing the templates. That said, I understand that apps impose limitations to allow someone who’s just starting out to create a functional website that doesn’t confuse.

Where Jimdo failed most was flexibility for switching between devices and the inability to access customer support from within the app.

Despite its limitations, Jimdo does succeed in making website creation approachable for beginners. With a bit of patience, it's possible to create a clean, simple site entirely from your phone, which is still a rare and valuable offering.

Jimdo Creator offers a simple setup process which requires either an email address and password or Facebook and Google login. It has an intuitive interface, making it easy for users with little to no experience in web design to create a website.

All in all, Jimdo provides a stable and smooth experience, ensuring that you can create and edit your websites without major technical issues.

But there are some downsides, at least in the free version, including limited SEO tools, no AI, and few customization options. Jimdo's app will be useful for people building simple presentation websites, but less so for those needing a highly customized or more feature-rich site.

With these key points in mind, let’s take a look at how Jimdo performed during the testing process using our 7 key evaluation criteria.

Getting Started With Jimdo App

Once you've downloaded the Jimdo App, it's easy to get started. You can login with your Google, Facebook or Apple credentials OR sign up and confirm with your email address.

Selecting a template

Selecting a template

1. Ease of Use & Clarity  ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)

Jimdo Creator is designed to be user-friendly and has an intuitive interface which is easy to navigate. The interface is clean and simple for beginners to grasp and allows you to quickly get on with creating your website.

When you login for the first time find the screen which will hold any websites you create in your account, a message – "No websites have been added yet" – and a (+) icon button that gets you started with the process of creating your first website.

The introduction walks you through selecting from a choice of 5 templates, adding pages, and inserting content. It would have been nice to have a wider choice of templates.

When working with the Jimdo app, you continuously get to see a preview of your website, so that you get a good sense of the progress of your work.

The click-to-edit editor and the prominent plus button for adding elements located to the bottom right of the screen provide a focal point where you can access all the elements that form the foundation of your website.

You may not find Jimdo's app to be as flexible as some other website builders, because while editing content is straightforward, making changes to page layouts and elements can feel restrictive.

Pros:

  • User-friendly interface, ideal for beginners.
  • Minimal learning curve with basic tools that are easy to use.
  • Simple and clear setup process with guided steps.

Cons:

  • Some features and settings are hard to find.
  • No built-in tutorials or tooltips for extra guidance.
  • Limited control over layout customization.

2. Features, Functionality & AI Capabilities ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3.5/5)

Jimdo offers basic features for creating a simple website, such as adding text, images, and buttons, plus the addition of a built-in blogging tool, which is certainly nice to have for publishing regular content and keeping potential customers informed with updates.

The free plan has enough tools to create a functional site, but people looking for more advanced options like custom forms, integrations, and detailed analytics, will need to upgrade to a paid plan.

While the app makes it easy to start and manage a site on mobile, it's not fully mirrored with the desktop editor. If you build your site using Jimdo’s browser-based version, some elements can’t be modified later in the app. This limited cross-device flexibility might be frustrating for users who like to switch between phone and computer.

AI-powered tools or smart design suggestions are not offered in the app. You have to create and organize your content in your chosen template without any guidance. This can be challenging for those unfamiliar with the best practices of building a website.  For more experienced users able to focus on content and communicating their message to their customers, the lack of distraction will be positive.

Pros:

  • Includes essential tools like text, images, buttons, and blog posts.
  • Simple workflow makes adding and editing content quick.
  • Built-in blogging feature is helpful for personal and business sites.
  • Mobile and Desktop view inside the app for keeping track and creating a responsive experience.

Cons:

  • No AI-powered tools or smart recommendations.
  • Limited cross-device editing between app and browser.
  • Custom form-building tools are only available with a paid upgrade.

3. Design & Customization ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3.5/5)

Jimdo offers a selection of templates, but customization is limited. Users can make basic changes to colors and fonts, but there is little flexibility when it comes to editing elements as you are limited to the layouts provided in the app.

You can add elements block by block by clicking the prominent plus button (+) and rearrange the blocks by clicking on the block icon in the top left.

The range of templates available is limited, and although they are easy to edit they feel somewhat outdated compared to other website builders that offer more modern and flexible designs.

It would have been great to have templates suited to more kinds of businesses. Jimdo gives you access to just 5 general templates, which you'll need to use your imagination to bring to life and to match your project or branding.

Pros

  • Offers a selection of templates that are good starting points.
  • Allows basic color and font adjustments.
  • Enables adding and rearranging elements block by block from your phone.
  • Mobile-responsive templates ensure proper display on all devices.

Cons

  • Limited to only five general templates.
  • May require extra time to achieve the desired look.
  • Templates are not as modern or visually flexible as competitors.
  • Would have been useful to be able to resize a logo inside the app.

4. Performance & Speed ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)

The Jimdo app is well-optimized, providing a smooth user experience with minimal lag. Loading times for published sites are reasonable, but no performance enhancements like image compression or caching to further optimize speed were noticed when uploading images.

While editing pages, the app responds quickly, and saving changes are applied instantly. That said, image-heavy websites may see slower load times compared to platforms that offer automatic compression and optimization. This can be easily be rectified by compressing the image to make the file size smaller, with little to no loss in quality – a good practice when uploading images to any website builder.

Pros:

  • Reliable app performance with few technical issues.
  • Quick response time when editing and saving changes.
  • Websites generally load at an acceptable speed.

Cons:

  • No built-in image compression or caching tools.
  • Speed optimization requires manual intervention.

Adding Headings in Jimdo

5. SEO Capabilities ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)

Jimdo’s SEO tools in the free version are very basic. Users cannot modify important SEO elements like meta descriptions, structured data, or advanced site analytics.

Creating a website which is found by search engines without any SEO advice will be challenging for those unfamiliar with the best practices of building discoverable websites.

These features are locked behind the paid plans, making it difficult to optimize a site for search engines without upgrading.

For those wanting to rank higher in search results and create a truly discoverable website, not being able to add various metadata and the lack of education about H2, H3, H4 headings are drawbacks of using the free version of Jimdo. Heading tags are added to the site, but there's no explanation that SMALL, MEDIUM and LARGE become headings, and why these are important for SEO.

Pros:

  • Basic visibility settings allow users to submit their site to search engines.
  • Paid plans unlock better SEO functionality.

Cons:

  • No ability to edit meta descriptions in the free version.
  • No structured data, no explicit heading tag control, and no keyword optimization tools.
  • SEO guidance and tips are not included in the app.

6. Pricing & Value for Money ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (4/5)

Jimdo offers a free plan for basic website creation, but to unlock advanced features such as SEO tools, custom domains, and expanded storage, users need to upgrade.

Pricing starts at $11/month for the 'Start' plan and goes up to $45/month for the 'Unlimited' plan, with additional e-commerce options available for online store owners.

You will need to visit the website for pricing, where you'll also have the option to pay and upgrade.

Unfortunately you cannot upgrade from within the app, and there are no links to pricing, nor is the pricing listed inside the app. This is important to note as a truly mobile website builder needs to not only allow you to build from the app, but to make payment for upgrades when required too.

Pros:

  • Free plan allows users to create a website at no cost.
  • Paid plans offer key upgrades like a custom domain and ad removal.
  • No hidden fees, with clear pricing details available.

Cons:

  • Free plan includes Jimdo-branded ads on websites.
  • Advanced features require a paid subscription.

7. Customer Support & Communication ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)

Support is available in the settings menu in the app, with the option to contact support and send a message.

You can access the Jimdo Creator Help Center in the menu, which redirects you to the main website with useful articles to help you build your website should you run into technical difficulties or otherwise get stuck.

The pricing table shows that Free users do not have access to live chat or email support, and the time taken to get a reply varies from plan to plan. With the UNLIMITED $45 per month plan you can expect a response to your query in 1 hour, whereas for START, at $11 per month, it is "within 1-2 workdays".

Pros

  • Support accessible via the main menu, with options for chat and email depending on your plan.
  • Jimdo Creator Help Center has useful self-help articles.
  • Unlimited plan offers fast support responses, within 1 hour.

Cons

  • Free users do not have access to live chat or email support.
  • Response times vary by plan, with the Start plan taking 1–2 working days for replies.

Final Thoughts

Jimdo Creator is a solid, user-friendly option if you're looking to quickly set up a basic website without any technical hassles. Its intuitive interface and smooth mobile experience make it a candidate for small business, freelancer, or personal project use cases.

The free version limits you to a five-page website, which will be a significant constraint for some. If you need more pages, you'll have to upgrade to the START plan, which allows up to 10.

Keep in mind that the app’s limited customization, basic SEO tools, and lack of AI-powered enhancements may not meet all your advanced needs, so consider whether upgrading aligns with your long-term goals.

Can You Build a Complete Website with the Jimdo Creator App Using Only Your Mobile Phone?

Yes, you can build a complete website using the Jimdo Creator App solely on your mobile phone.

However, keep in mind that cross-device compatibility is limited and if you start building in the browser, you won’t be able to edit all elements later in the app.

The app lets you select from various templates, add content, and preview your site in real time, making the process straightforward and mobile-friendly.

If you want more than a basic, five-page site, you'll need to upgrade to the START plan to get up to 10 pages and a more comprehensive presentation website.

All in all, we were able to build a very basic presentation website with a phone using the assets we had to hand, within the constraints of Jimdo's free plan.
